toxins are constantly bombarding our bodies. Toxins are chemicals with

for one or two days. Then you might move to four or five days of brown

except red meat, wheat, sugar, eggs, and prepackaged or junk food.</div>

In general, organic foods and drinks and lots of water are required on a natural detox diet. And alcohol, <a href="http://www.webmd.com/balance/caffeine-myths-and-facts">caffeine</a>, tobacco, drugs, processed or refined foods, and certain supplements are not allowed.</div>

In some cases, a detox diet is paired with changes
in lifestyle, which is also meant to foster the cleansing of toxins from
the body. Saunas and exercise might also be recommended to increase
sweating, another way thought to purge the body of certain substances.</div>

the aisles of your local market, checking out the fresh produce, meats, and
dairy products, you realize there's another choice to make: Should you buy
organic?</div>

Advocates say organic food is safer, possibly more nutritious,
and often better tasting than non-organic food. They also say organic
production is better for the environment and kinder to animals.</div>

And more and more shoppers seem convinced. Even though organic
food typically costs more --sometimes a <i>lot</i> more -- sales are steadily
increasing.</div>

"We've had a strong 20%-a-year growth rate since 1990,"
says Katherine DiMatteo, executive director of the Organic Trade Association
(OTA). She also says more land is going into organic production all the time --
up to 2.35 million acres in 48 states as of 2001.</div>

<div align="left" class="node">
But many experts say there's not enough evidence to prove any
real advantage to eating organic foods.</div>
<div align="left" class="node">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="node">
"There's really very limited information in people on
actual health outcomes with consumption of these products," says David
Klurfeld, PhD, chairman of the department of Nutrition and Food Science at
Wayne State University in Detroit. "We don't know enough to say that one is
better than the other."</div>
<div align="left" class="node">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="node">
So before you decide whether organic food is worth the price of
admission, let's take a look at the issues.</div>
<h3>
What Qualifies as Organic? </h3>
<div class="node">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="node">
Before October 2002, states followed varying rules for
certifying and labeling organic products. But now all organic foods are grown
and processed according to strict national standards set by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture.</div>
<div align="left" class="node">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="node">
To meet these standards, organic crops must be produced without
conventional pesticides (including herbicides), synthetic fertilizers, sewage
sludge, bioengineering, or ionizing radiation. Organically raised animals must
be given organic feed and kept free of growth hormones and antibiotics. Organic
farm animals must have access to the outdoors, including pastureland for
grazing.</div>
<div align="left" class="node">
If a food has a "USDA organic" label, it contains at
least 95 percent organic ingredients, and a government-approved expert has
inspected the farm where it was produced to make sure the farmer follows USDA
requirements.</div>
<div align="left" class="node">

<div align="left" class="node">
"Before the standards went into effect, you never knew what
you were getting," says Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD/LD, director of nutrition
for the WebMD Weight Loss Clinic. "My comment to people always used to be,
'Buyer beware,' so I'm thrilled that now we as consumers can be confident that
when we buy something organic, it really does adhere to certain established
standards."</div>
<h3>
Is Organic Food Safer?</h3>
<div align="left" class="node">
"If you're talking about pesticides, the evidence is pretty
conclusive. Your chances of getting pesticide residues are much less with
organic food," says John Reganold, professor of soil science at Washington
State University in Pullman, Wash.</div>
<div align="left" class="node">
Reganold points to a large-scale study done by the Consumers
Union. Researchers looked at data from more than 94,000 food samples and 20
different crops. They found that organically grown crops consistently had about
one-third as many pesticide residues as the conventionally grown versions.
Organic foods also were far less likely to contain residues of more than one
pesticide.</div>

Even so, the amount of man-made pesticide residues found in
conventional foods is still well below the level that the Environmental
Protection Agency has deemed unsafe. The real issue is whether these small
doses, over years and decades, might add up to an increased health risk down
the line.</div>

Reganold. "But it's something to think about, and we're the guinea

Man-made pesticides aren't the only threats to food safety.
There is also the question of natural toxins produced by the plants themselves.
In this arena, conventional foods may actually have the advantage.</div>
<div align="left" class="node">

<div align="left" class="node">
Because organic production steers clear of synthetic
insecticides and herbicides, organic crops usually contend with more pests and
weeds than conventional crops. This means the organic plants may produce more
natural toxins.</div>
<div align="left" class="node">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="node">
"Plants can't get up and walk away. If they're being
attacked, they've got to sit there and take it. So they may resort to their own
chemical warfare," explains Carl Winter, director of the FoodSafe program
and an extension food toxicologist at the University of California, Davis.</div>
<div align="left" class="node">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="node">
These natural pesticides could be just as harmful to people --
or even more so -- than the synthetic pesticides used in conventional
agriculture. One familiar example is solanine, a substance produced by potatoes
as they turn green, which can make you ill if you ingest too much of it.</div>

<div align="left" class="node">
Another safety concern that has been raised about organic food
is the issue of manure fertilizers. Some critics fear that using manure to
fertilize organic crops might increase the risk of contamination by dangerous
microbes like <i>E. coli</i>.</div>

<div align="left" class="node">
"The organic farmers talk about the soil being more alive
on organic farms than conventional farms. That life isn't just insects and
worms; it's loaded with bacteria," says Klurfeld.</div>
<div align="left" class="node">

<div align="left" class="node">
But organic production standards do include strict rules on the
composting and application of manure. And there's little evidence that organic
food has bacterial contamination more often than conventional food.</div>
<div align="left" class="node">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="node">
"The organic system is the only one with agricultural
standards that prohibit the use of raw manure within a certain time frame
between harvests of crops for human consumption," says the Organic Trade
Association's DiMatteo. She adds that bacterial contamination usually happens
because of improper handling after the food has left the farm, and conventional
food is just as likely to be affected.</div>

Whether the issue is bad bacteria or pesticide residues,
experts agree that the best way to safeguard yourself is to thoroughly rinse
<i>all</i> fruits and vegetables under running water. You should even wash
items with inedible skins, like melons and citrus fruits, because cutting the
rind with a knife can bring contaminants to the inside.</div>
<h3>
Is Organic Food More Nutritious? </h3>
<div align="left" class="node">
Right now, no one can say for sure whether organic food is any
more nutritious than conventional food. A few studies have reported that
organic produce has higher levels of vitamin C, certain minerals, and
antioxidants -- thought to protect the body against aging, cardiovascular
disease, and cancer. But the differences are so small that they probably have
no impact on overall nutrition.</div>

"So far nothing is definitive, but there really hasn't been
a lot of money expended on looking at the nutritional benefits of organic
products," says DiMatteo. She points out that studies done before the USDA
national standard went into effect are likely to be invalid, as there were then
no reliable controls on organic production methods.</div>

There is one nutritional certainty, though. If you want to get
the most from your food, eat it while it's fresh.</div>

though the nutrients might be higher in organic food to begin with, if it's
sitting in your refrigerator, you could lose that benefit," says
Zelman.</div>

Plus, fresh food just tastes better. This may be one reason
people sometimes report that organic foods have more flavor. Because organic
farms tend to be smaller operations, they often sell their products closer to
the point of harvest. So don't be surprised if the organic fruits and
vegetables in your market taste more "farm fresh" than the comparable
conventional produce.</div>
<h3>
Is It Worth the Cost? </h3>
<div align="left" class="node">
Whether or not organic food really is safer or more nutritious,
advocates say there is one more compelling reason to go organic: The health of
the environment and society as a whole.</div>
<div align="left" class="node">

<div align="left" class="node">
"Toxic and persistent pesticides do accumulate. They
accumulate in the soil; they accumulate in the water; they accumulate in our
bodies," says DiMatteo. "So by eliminating the use of these pesticides
and fertilizers in the organic production system, we are not contributing any
further to this pollution."</div>

<div align="left" class="node">
But food experts caution that while the big picture is
important, you must make the decision that makes the most sense for <i>you</i>.
If you can manage the higher price, and you like the idea of fewer pesticides
and a more environmentally friendly production system, organic food may be for
you. But don't skimp on healthy conventional foods just because you think you
need to save your pennies for the few organic items that you can afford.</div>

"The best thing you can do for yourself is to eat lots of
fruits and vegetables and grains. And eat variety. From my perspective, it
doesn't matter whether they are organic or conventional," Winter says.</div>

periods. Switching between the two makes your body work harder, burning
more calories faster than it would at a steady, moderate pace. </div>

"You’ve got to be disciplined with it, but you don’t
have to do it much, or for too long," says Doug Katona, a strength and
conditioning coach who trains world-class athletes at his CrossFit
Endurance gym in Newport Beach, Calif. </div>

"Instead of 45 minutes on a recumbent bike, reading a
magazine, give me 15 minutes of interval work," Katona says. "It will
be more challenging, but the workout will go by a lot faster and you’ll

syndrome given an inactive <a href="http://www.webmd.com/pain-management/what-is-the-placebo-effect">placebo</a>. Two of the women in the treated group reported spontaneous pregnancies during the trial.</div>

"There is a lot of interest in homeopathic or
natural remedies for this condition," said study author Dr. Daniel Kort,
a postdoctoral fellow in reproductive endocrinology at the medical
center. "This may be something we can do using a totally natural

childbearing age have polycystic ovary syndrome, with up to 5 million
Americans affected. Polycystic ovary syndrome, which involves many of

infertility, acne, excess hair growth on the face or body, and thinning
scalp hair.</div>

name Clomid) and diabetes medications such as metformin, said Dr. Avner

Of the 16 patients who completed Kort's trial, 11
were given daily 1,500-milligram cinnamon supplements and five were
given placebo pills. Diet and activity levels were monitored, and
patients completed monthly menstrual calendars.</div>

After six months, women receiving cinnamon had
significant improvement in menstrual cycle regularity, having an average
of nearly four menstrual periods over that time compared to an average
of 2.2 periods among the placebo group. Two women reported spontaneous
pregnancies after three months of cinnamon treatment, meaning they
became pregnant without additional help.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Polycystic ovary syndrome "is one of the most common
causes why women don't have regular menstrual cycles," Kort said. "But
the clinical consequences later in life are truly great -- from an
increased risk of diabetes and glucose intolerance to endometrial
cancer. Many women can go their whole lives without regular menstrual
cycles, and it doesn't necessarily bother them until they want to have
children."</div>

The 1,500-milligram cinnamon dose was chosen for this
trial because it was between the 1,000 to 2,000 mg daily that seemed to
have metabolic effects on diabetic patients in earlier research, Kort
said. But all doses in that range are cheaply obtained, costing pennies
per capsule.</div>

"Compared to most medical therapies these days, the cost is very small," he said.</div>

Although the study suggests a link between cinnamon
and improvement of polycystic ovary syndrome, it doesn't establish a
direct cause-and-effect relationship.</div>

Still, Hershlag called the study "welcome and
interesting" and said he sees no reason women with polycystic ovary
syndrome shouldn't use more cinnamon in their food or take cinnamon
supplements.</div>

"Any work that's something nutritional in nature and
seems to affect the abnormal physiology of polycystic ovaries is
welcome," Hershlag said. "If they want to spice up their life and take
it, that's fine . . . but I think the best thing to do when you have
polycystic ovaries is to be under the control of a physician."</div>

Some women with polycystic ovary syndrome from
Kort's clinic are already trying cinnamon supplementation at home in the
hopes of regulating their own menstrual cycles, he said, although he
acknowledged the spice wasn't likely to be a cure-all for the condition.</div>

"It's unlikely to be the sole source of improvement
or to change entire (treatment) protocols," he said. "It's not going to
regulate every patient who takes it, but a good percentage who take it
may experience some benefit, and the side effects are low. It's
relatively cheap and well tolerated."</div>

Some day, Kort added, he hopes to organize a larger trial examining the issue.</div>

<li>Help your balance so you avoid falls that can damage bones and joints</li>

<h3>
Strengthening Exercises</h3>
As we get older, we lose bone. But strengthening exercises can
help slow that process and help prevent osteoporosis. Strengthening
exercises are also helpful for joints.<br />
"The best protection for a joint is having strong muscles around
that joint," says physical therapist Alice Bell, vice president of
clinical services at Genesis Rehabilitation Services in Kennett Square,
Pa.<br />
Bell suggests you do strengthening exercises two to three times a
week to build bones and muscles around joints. To do that, you can use
hand-held weights or resistance bands. The amount of resistance or
weight should tire your muscle without causing joint pain.<br />
You should work each major muscle group, including your arms and
legs, as well as your core and the muscles that support good posture,
Bell says.<br />
Give yourself at least a day between strength training so your
body can rest. "Our muscles actually gain strength during the recovery,"
Bell says.<br />
<h3>
Aerobic Exercise</h3>
Aerobic exercise revs your heart. Weight-bearing exercise (such
as climbing stairs, dancing, hiking, or walking) can help build bones
and keep joints healthy, Bell says.<br />
Biking and swimming are not weight-bearing activities. They may
be great for your muscles, heart, and lungs, but they aren't the best
choices to boost bones.<br />
Your goal: Get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity
every week, including some weight-bearing exercise. That amounts to
about 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.<br />
You don't need to do the 30 minutes all at once. Find ways to
build activity into your daily routine, whether it's yard work or taking
a brisk walk (just a leisurely walk doesn’t count) with a friend.<br />
<h3>
Flexibility</h3>
Flexibility exercises, such as stretching and yoga, are also good
for joints. These can help preserve your range of motion. Do these at
least 3 days a week.<br />
Take care, though, that you don't stretch too far. Also, warm up
for a few minutes first. To help prevent injuries, don't stretch a
"cold" muscle.<br />
Consider adding balance exercises to your routine three times a
week, Bell suggests. She says simple exercises like standing on one leg
can help prevent bone-breaking falls. Tai chi is another option to
improve balance.<br />
<h3>
Getting Started</h3>
If you're not active now, ease into it.<br />
"Don't measure yourself against others," says Jennifer Hootman, PhD, of the CDC's Arthritis Program.<br />
If you have a condition like heart disease, or if you’re a man
over 45 or a woman over 55, it’s a good idea to see your doctor before
starting a new exercise program.<br />
<h3>
How to Avoid Injury</h3>
To keep your joints safe during exercise, Hootman offers these tips:<br />
<ul>
<li>Don't be a weekend warrior. Spread exercise over the week to avoid overloading your joints.</li>
<li>Avoid extreme positions, like deep knee bends, which can harm your joints.</li>
<li>Exercise your back and abdomen to strengthen your core, which is important for good body mechanics.</li>
</ul>
Proper
alignment is key for keeping bones healthy as well, Bell says. "You'll
want to maintain good posture doing whatever activity you choose," she
says. She also warns against doing exercises that involve rounding the
back, such as crunches, which can cause spinal fractures in people with
weak bones.<br />
Consider working with a personal trainer to make sure you’re
doing exercises correctly, since doing them incorrectly is a leading
cause of injury.<br />
<h3>
Aches: Normal or Not?</h3>
It's normal to have some muscle aches and soreness after exercise. This is especially true if you're doing something new.<br />
Regular muscle soreness should go away after a few days. Each
time you change your exercise routine, which you should do regularly, or
do a new exercise, the muscle soreness may return for a few days.<br />
However, sharp muscle or joint pain, or severe swelling around a
joint after workouts, could be a sign that you're going too hard or
doing something wrong. Stop immediately if something hurts a lot. Check
in with your doctor to see what happened. Later, when you're feeling
ready, you might try switching to a less-intense exercise.<br />
Soreness that lasts more than a few days is also a concern; you may be doing an exercise incorrectly or overloading your joints.<br />
A physical therapist or trainer can help recommend activities
that are safe and adapt exercises as needed to work with your body.<br />

If you're finding it more challenging than ever to juggle the demands of your job and the rest of your life, you're not alone.<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Many people are putting in extra hours, or using their smartphones to be on call when they're not physically at work.</span>
<br />
"A lot of people are having a more difficult time finding balance
in their lives because there have been cutbacks or layoffs where they
work. They're afraid it may happen to them, so they're putting in more
hours," says psychologist Robert Brooks, PhD, co-author of <i>The Power of Resilience: Achieving Balance, Confidence, and Personal Strength in Your Life</i>.<br />
"But even if you don't have much control over the hours you have
to work, you can ask yourself: In what other ways am I bringing greater
enjoyment into my life?" Brooks says. "Focus your time and attention on
things you can control."<br />
Here are five ways to bring a little more balance to your daily routine:<br />
<h3>
1. Build downtime into your schedule.</h3>
When you plan your week, make it a point to schedule time with your family and friends, and activities that help you recharge.<br />
If a date night with your spouse or a softball game with friends
is on your calendar, you'll have something to look forward to and an
extra incentive to manage your time well so you don't have to cancel.<br />
"It helps to be proactive about scheduling," says Laura Stack, a productivity expert in Denver and author of <i>SuperCompetent: The Six Keys to Perform at Your Productive Best. </i>"When
I go out with my girlfriends, we all whip out our cell phones and put
another girls' night out on the calendar for 1 month later."<br />
Stack also plans an activity with her family, like going to a
movie or the park, every Sunday afternoon. "We do this because if
there's nothing on the schedule, time tends to get frittered away and
the weekend may end without us spending quality time together," she
says.<br />
Michael Neithardt, an actor and television commercial producer in
New York City, wakes up 3 hours before he has to leave for work so he
can go for a run and spend some time with his wife and baby.<br />
"A lot of my friends tend to wake up, shower, and go straight to
work. And they often complain about having no time to do anything," he<span style="background-color: white;"> says. </span>"I
find that if I can get those 3 hours in the morning, I have a more
productive and peaceful workday. I can sure tell the difference when I
don't."<br />

<h3>
2. Drop activities that sap your time or energy.</h3>
"Many people waste their time on activities or people that add no
value -- for example, spending too much time at work with a colleague
who is constantly venting and gossiping," says Marilyn Puder-York, PhD, a
psychologist and executive coach in New York and Connecticut.<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Her advice: Take stock of activities that don't enhance your career or personal life, and minimize the ti</span>me you spend on them.<br />
You may even be able to leave work earlier if you make a
conscious effort to limit the time you spend on the web and social media
sites, making personal calls, or checking your bank balance. "We often
get sucked into these habits that are making us much less efficient
without realizing it," Stack says.<br />
<h3>
3. Rethink your errands.</h3>
Consider whether you can outsource any of your time-consuming household chores or errands.<br />
Could you order your groceries online and have them delivered?
Hire a kid down the street to mow your lawn? Have your dry cleaning
picked up and dropped off at your home or office? Order your stamps
online so you don't have to go to the post office? Even if you're on a
tight budget, you may discover that the time you'll save will make it
worth it.<br />
Stack also suggests trading services with friends. Offer to do tasks that you enjoy or that you were planning to do anyway.<br />
"You could exchange gardening services for babysitting services,"
Stack says. "If you like to cook, you could prepare and freeze a couple
of meals and give them to a friend in exchange for wrapping your
holiday gifts."<br />
<h3>
4. Get moving.</h3>
It's hard to make time for exercise when you have a jam-packed
schedule, but it may ultimately help you get more done by boosting your
energy level and ability to concentrate.<br />
"Research shows exercise can help you to be more alert," Brooks
says. "And I've noticed that when I don't exercise because I'm trying to
squeeze in another half hour of writing, I don't feel as alert."<br />
Samantha Harris, a lawyer who works for a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia,<span style="background-color: white;"> goes to her gy</span>m
2 or 3 mornings a week before her family wakes up. "It's been a real
boost in terms of the way I feel for the rest of the day," she says. "I
feel like my head is clearer and I've had a little time to myself."<br />
<h3>
5. Remember that a little relaxation goes a long way.</h3>
<span style="background-color: white;">Don't assume that you
need to make big changes to bring more balance to your life. Brooks
recommends setting realistic goals, like leaving the office earlier 1
night per week.</span>
<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">"Slowly build more
activities into your schedule that are important to you," he says.
"Maybe you can start by spending an hour a week on your hobby of
carpentry, or planning a weekend getaway with your spouse once a year."</span>
<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Even during a hectic
day, you can take 10 or 15 minutes to do something that will recharge
your batteries. "Take a bath, read a trashy novel, go for a walk, or
listen to music," Stack says. "Yo</span>u have to make a little time for the things that ignite your joy."<br />

The products include the Craze pre-workout powder, made by New
York-based Driven Sports, and a pill called Detonate, marketed as a diet
aid by New Jersey-based Gaspari Nutrition. Both are marketed as
containing only natural ingredients, the newspaper said, but its own
analysis conducted in both the United States and South Korea found they
contained an amphetamine-like compound called
N,alpha-diethylphenylethylamine.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"These are basically brand-new drugs that are being designed in
clandestine laboratories where there's absolutely no guarantee of
quality control," Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor at Harvard
Medical School and a co-author of the analysis of the Craze samples,
told <i>USA Today</i>.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"It has never been studied in the human body," Cohen said. "Yes,
it might make you feel better or have you more pumped up in your
workout, but the risks you might be putting your body under of <a href="http://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/guide/heart-disease-heart-attacks">heart attack</a> and <a href="http://www.webmd.com/stroke/default.htm">stroke</a> are completely unknown."</div>

the Year" by Bodybuilding.com. While Walmart and many online retailers
have stopped selling the supplement, it continues to be available on

A lawyer representing Driven Sports declined to comment on the latest findings. "We have previously provided <i>USA Today</i>
with a plethora of data from a DEA Certified Lab indicating the absence

in an e-mail to the newspaper. "In light of <i>USA Today</i>'s decision to ignore the data we have provided, we respectfully decline to comment for your story."</div>

Nearly one in 10 teenagers and young adults has coerced
or forced a peer to engage in some form of sexual activity, and violent
pornography is partly to blame, according to a new study.
</div>

The study of more than 1,000 young people aged 14 to
21 found that 9 percent reported forcing or pressuring a peer to engage
in sexual activity. They admitted to coercive sex, sexual assault and
rape, most often involving a romantic partner.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Perpetrators were five times more likely to have
been exposed to X-rated media that showed a person being physically hurt
during sex, the study found.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"From a public health perspective, the violent
pornography is something we need to be concerned about in terms of our
young people," said study co-author Michele Ybarra, president and
research director of the Center for Innovative Public Health Research in
San Clemente, Calif.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The young people also recounted a disturbing lack of consequences for their actions.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"Two out of three of our perpetrators said no one found out, so they didn't get in trouble," Ybarra said. </div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Further, nearly nine out of 10 perpetrators said they felt the victim bore full or partial responsibility.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The study, published Oct. 7 in the journal <i>JAMA Pediatrics</i>,
involved a national sample of nearly 1,100 young people and focused
specifically on perpetration of coercive and forced sexual behavior.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"We know a bit about youth who are victims of sexual
violence, but we don't know much at all about youth as perpetrators,"
Ybarra said. "It's important we know more if we're going to reduce the
sexual-violence rate."</div>

Three out of four victims were romantic partners. Acts of sexual violence reported by young people included:</div>
<ul class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<li>8 percent kissed, touched or made someone else do something sexual knowing the other person did not want to.</li>
<li>3 percent coerced someone to have sex when they knew the other person did not want to.</li>
<li>3 percent attempted but were not able to force someone to have sex.</li>
<li>2 percent forced someone to have sex.</li>
</ul>

Perpetrators commonly are 16 years old when they
commit their first act of sexual violence, but boys were overwhelmingly
more likely to have their first episode at 15 years of age or younger,
the survey found.</div>

"It suggests there might be different reasons and
ways in which males become perpetrators that are different from
females," Ybarra said.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Teens more often used coercive tactics rather than physical violence to force sex upon another person.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
One-third of perpetrators said they argued with or
pressured the person, while nearly two-thirds said they got angry or
made the person feel guilty. Five percent of perpetrators reported using
threats and 8 percent reported using physical force. Alcohol was
involved in 15 percent of situations.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
These tactics work because children are not getting
enough education at home or at school regarding sexual relationships,
said Susan Tortolero, a professor of public health at the University of
Texas School of Public Health, in Houston.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"In this
country, we aren't talking at all about healthy sexual relationships,"
Tortolero said. "Most of the time, we're just telling kids not to have
sex. People don't know how to talk about sex, so almost always people
are having sex without explicit consent. If we could teach kids how to
give explicit consent, then they might be more protected."</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Dr. Angela Diaz, director of Mount Sinai Hospital's
Adolescent Health Center, in New York City, said sex education can teach
potential perpetrators to respect others' bodies and accept "no" for an
answer, and can also teach potential victims to better recognize the
tactics used to coerce sex.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"They may say, 'Unless you have sex with me, I'm
going to go have sex with someone else,'" Diaz said. "Young people have
to learn that if their partner says that, maybe they're better off if
they do go somewhere else."</div>

Some focus also needs to be placed on the role of violent pornography, Ybarra said.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
She said pornography itself does not seem to play a
role. Comparable numbers of perpetrators and non-perpetrators said they
had watched non-violent pornography.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
But only 3 percent of non-perpetrators said they had
watched pornography that involved violence, compared with 17 percent of
perpetrators.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"It's not pornography generally that seems to be
concerning, it's the pornography that portrays violence in sexual
situations," Ybarra said.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Ybarra said any education campaign also needs to
focus on the role of bystanders who hear about sexual violence but do
not report it.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"We need sexual-violence-prevention programs in the
high school and middle school settings that tell young people, 'If you
hear something, if you know something, you must get involved,'" she
said.</div>

A regular bedtime might guarantee more than a good night's <a href="http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/default.htm">sleep</a>
for both kids and their parents -- it turns out that a regular bedtime
can make for a better-behaved child, new research suggests.
</div>

When 7-year-olds had irregular bedtimes, they were
more likely to have behavior problems than their peers with a consistent
time for their nightly shut-eye. And, the study also found that the
longer a child had been able to go to bed at different times each night,
the worse his or her behavior problems were.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"Irregular bedtimes were linked to behavioral
difficulties, and these effects appeared to accumulate through early
childhood," said the study's lead author, Yvonne Kelly, a professor of
lifecourse epidemiology at University College London.</div>

"We also found that the effects appeared to be
reversible -- children who changed from not having, to having, regular
bedtimes showed improvements in behaviors, and vice versa," she added.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Kelly and her colleagues reviewed data on more than
10,000 7-year-olds who were enrolled in the U.K. Millennium Cohort
Study. Details on the children's bedtimes were collected when they were
3, 5 and 7 years old.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
At the same time that sleep findings were collected,
researchers asked teachers and mothers to rate the children's
behaviors. The behavior survey included 25 questions.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Kids with irregular bedtimes had more behavioral
problems than did children with regular bedtimes, according to both
their teachers and their mothers. The children's mothers rated the
children with irregular bedtimes as having slightly more behavior
problems than did the teachers.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The longer a child had an irregular bedtime, the
greater the behavioral difficulties. On average, a child who had an
irregular bedtime at one time-point in the study increased his or her
score on the behavioral difficulties scale by about a half-point. If
that child had an irregular bedtime at two time-points during the study,
the score increased by about 1 point. If the child had an irregular
bedtime at all three time-points during the study, the score increased
by just over 2 points.</div>

"A half-point corresponds to a 'small' effect.
Irregular bedtimes at two ages, and all three ages, corresponded to a 1-
and 2-point difference in behavior scores. These effect sizes would
have 'moderate' clinical significance," said Kelly when asked if these
score differences would make a noticeable difference in a child's
behavior.</div>

The good news from the study is that if you switch
your child to a regular bedtime from an irregular bedtime schedule, your
child's behavior will likely improve. The reverse is also true. If a
child with a regular bedtime switches to an irregular one, behavior will
likely worsen, the researchers noted.</div>

Kelly said irregular bedtimes could contribute to
behavior problems in several ways. "First, switching bedtimes from night
to night interferes with circadian rhythms [the body clock] and induces
a state akin to jet lag. Second, disrupted sleep interferes with
processes to do with brain maturation," she explained.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Dr. Ruby Roy, a pediatrician at La Rabida Children's
Hospital in Chicago, agreed that several reasons may contribute to a
connection between irregular bedtimes and behavior problems.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"When kids
don't have structure and predictability, they have anxiety," Roy said.
"Kids naturally want to push boundaries, and when they don't have
boundaries, it causes anxiety and acting out. A lack of sleep can also
cause behavior problems, and some of these kids may only be going to
sleep when they're passing out from exhaustion, which means they won't
get enough sleep," she explained.</div>

"Kids probably sleep better with regular bedtimes and when they have established bedtime routines," Roy added.</div>

Kelly concluded: "Getting regular routines around
bedtimes appears to be important for children's behavioral development.
But, there are lots of other influential factors, too. So we shouldn't
get too hung up about children having the same bedtime every single
night."</div>

their "terrible twos" and early teens -- to defy authority every now and
then. They may express their defiance by arguing, disobeying, or
talking back to their parents, teachers, or other adults. When this
behavior lasts longer than six months and is excessive compared to what
is usual for the child's age, it may mean that the child has a type of
behavior disorder called oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).</div>

uncooperative, defiant, hostile, and annoying behavior toward people in
authority. The child's behavior often disrupts the child's normal daily

What Causes Oppositional Defiant Disorder?</h3>

The
exact cause of ODD is not known, but it is believed that a combination
of biological, genetic, and environmental factors may contribute to the
condition.</div>

<b>Biological</b>: Some studies suggest that defects
in or injuries to certain areas of the brain can lead to serious
behavioral problems in children. In addition, ODD has been linked to
abnormal amounts of certain types of brain chemicals, or
neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters help nerve cells in the brain
communicate with each other. If these chemicals are out of balance or
not working properly, messages may not make it through the brain
correctly, leading to symptoms of ODD, and other mental illnesses.
Further, many children and teens with ODD also have other mental
illnesses, such as <a href="http://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/default.htm">ADHD</a>, learning disorders, depression, or an anxiety disorder, which may contribute to their behavior problems.</li>
<li>
<b>Genetics</b>: Many children and teens with ODD have
close family members with mental illnesses, including mood disorders,
anxiety disorders, and personality disorders. This suggests that a
vulnerability to develop ODD may be inherited.</li>

How Is Oppositional Defiant Disorder Diagnosed?</h3>

As
with adults, mental illnesses in children are diagnosed based on signs
and symptoms that suggest a particular illness like ODD. If symptoms are
present, the doctor will begin an evaluation by performing a complete
medical history and physical exam. Although there are no lab tests to
specifically diagnose ODD, the doctor may sometimes use tests such as
neuroimaging studies or blood tests if they suspect that there may be a
medical explanation for the behavior problems that occur. The doctor
also will look for signs of other conditions that often occur along with
ODD, such as ADHD and depression.</div>

If the doctor
cannot find a physical cause for the symptoms, he or she will likely
refer the child to a child and adolescent psychiatrist or psychologist,

between parent and child that identify rewards for positive behaviors

rejection by classmates and other peers because of their poor social

disorder called conduct disorder. When started early, treatment is
usually very effective.</div>

Can Oppositional Defiant Disorder Be Prevented?</h3>

Although it may not be possible to prevent ODD,
recognizing and acting on symptoms when they first appear can minimize
distress to the child and family, and prevent many of the problems
associated with the illness. Family members also can learn steps to take
if signs of relapse (return of symptoms) appear. In addition, providing
a nurturing, supportive, and consistent home environment with a balance
of love and discipline may help reduce symptoms and prevent episodes of
defiant behavior.</div>

portion control and cutting down on how much fat your child eats.
Simple ways to reduce fat intake in your child's diet and promote a
healthy weight include serving:</div>

<li>low-fat or nonfat dairy products</li>
<li>poultry without skin</li>
<li>lean cuts of meats</li>
<li>whole grain breads and cereals</li>

Leave the unhealthy choices like soda and juice at the grocery store.
Serve water with meals.</li>
<li><b>Encourage your children to eat slowly. </b>A child can detect <a href="http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/top-10-ways-to-deal-with-hunger">hunger</a>
and fullness better when they eat slowly. Before offering a second
helping or serving, ask your child to wait a few minutes to see if they
are truly still hungry. This will give the brain time to register
fullness.</li>
<li><b>Eat meals together as a family as often as possible.</b>
Try to make mealtimes pleasant with conversation and sharing, not a
time for scolding or arguing. If mealtimes are unpleasant, children may
try to eat faster to leave the table as soon as possible. They then may
learn to associate eating with <a href="http://www.webmd.com/balance/stress-management/">stress</a>.</li>
<li><b>Involve your children in food shopping and preparing meals. </b>These activities will give you hints about your children's food preferences, an opportunity to teach your children about <a href="http://www.webmd.com/diet/default.htm">nutrition</a>,
and provide your kids with a feeling of accomplishment. In addition,
children may be more willing to eat or try foods that they help prepare.</li>
<li><b>Plan for snacks. </b>Continuous
snacking may lead to overeating, but snacks that are planned at
specific times during the day can be part of a nutritious diet, without
spoiling a child's appetite at meal times. You should make snacks as
nutritious as possible, without depriving your children of occasional
chips or cookies, especially at parties or other social events.</li>
<li><b>Discourage eating meals or snacks while watching TV.</b>
Try to eat only in designated areas of your home, such as the dining
room or kitchen. Eating in front of the TV may make it difficult to pay
attention to feelings of fullness, and may lead to overeating.</li>
<li><b>Encourage your children to drink more water.</b> Over consumption of sweetened drinks and sodas has been linked to increased rates of <a href="http://children.webmd.com/guide/obesity-children">obesity in children</a>.</li>
<li><b>Try not to use food to punish or reward your children. </b>Withholding
food as a punishment may lead children to worry that they will not get
enough food. For example, sending children to bed without any dinner may
cause them to worry that they will go hungry. As a result, children may
try to eat whenever they get a chance. Similarly, when foods, such as
sweets, are used as a reward, children may assume that these foods are
better or more valuable than other foods. For example, telling children
that they will get dessert if they eat all of their vegetables sends the
wrong message about vegetables.</li>
<li><b>Make sure your children's meals outside the home are balanced. </b>Find
out more about their school lunch program, or pack their lunch to
include a variety of foods. Also, select healthier items when dining at
restaurants.</li>

Every fall, millions of U.S. children
get flu vaccinations at their pediatricians' offices. The CDC recommends
an annual flu vaccine for all Americans who are at least 6 months old.<br />
You
may have questions about the vaccination. Why can't last year's flu
shot protect your child this year? Do you need to get her a separate
vaccine for protection against the H1N1 strain? Should you request the
vaccination in nasal spray rather than injection form?<br />
For guidance, WebMD spoke with internist Lisa Grohskopf, MD, a medical officer in the CDC's Influenza Division.<br />
<h3>
Q: Why is it important for all children aged 6 months and up to get vaccinated?</h3>
A: Children, particularly those under age 5, are subject to
potentially very severe complications from influenza disease; some of
those children are hospitalized. Within that group, children under 2 are
especially prone to complications. For everyone aged 6 months and up,
the annual flu vaccine is the best way that we have available to protect
against complications.<br />
<h3>
Q: Is it really necessary to vaccinate my child this year if she received a flu shot last year?</h3>
A: The flu vaccine has four different vaccine virus ... strains
in it. In a typical season, at least one of those strains will change.<br />
Also, we know from a number of studies that the antibody response
to the vaccine tends to decline over time, so that’s why it’s important
to get a flu vaccine every year.<br />
<h3>
Q: How effective is the vaccine at preventing flu?</h3>
A: It depends on how well the vaccine matches the flu strains
that are circulating. The vaccine strains have to be chosen well in
advance of the flu season starting, and in years when there's a good
match, it's likely to work better.<br />
It also depends upon a person’s age and health status.<br />

Q: Are there any reasons why a child who's old enough should not get the flu vaccine?</h3>
A:
The main contraindication for the flu vaccine is a severe allergic
reaction to anything that is in the flu vaccine. One possibility is egg
[allergy], because all of the flu vaccines that are available in this
country are manufactured through a process that uses chicken eggs, the
vaccine is most likely going to have a very, very trace quantity of egg
protein left in it.<br />
The CDC has recommended that if a child's egg
allergy is a mild one -- meaning the child only experiences hives as a
reaction -- they may be given the flu vaccine with precautions: Things
like being watched in the doctor’s office for 30 minutes after receiving
the vaccine administration to make sure they don't have a severe
reaction. We recommend that they get the (injectable or killed) shot
rather than the nasal spray because there's more published data about
children with egg allergy for the shot.<br />
For those who have a more severe egg allergy -- shortness of
breath or any other symptom that may indicate something more serious --
we recommend that they consult with a specialist who's familiar with
allergies before they receive the vaccine.<br />
There are other things in the flu vaccine that people can
potentially be allergic to, so a history of having had a severe allergic
reaction to the vaccine itself or any of its components would be a
contraindication.<br />

Q: How can parents protect babies younger than 6 months from the flu?</h3>
A: Since babies under 6 months can’t get a flu shot, it’s
important to do everything you can to protect your child. The best way
to protect those children is getting the flu vaccine yourself. The
people who are in close contact with babies and take care of them should
do their best not to get sick themselves, so they don’t spread the flu
to the baby.<br />

Q: Does a flu shot given to a pregnant woman protect the newborn baby later on?</h3>
A: There have been studies showing that newborns do have some protection from mothers' vaccinations.</div>

Q: How many doses of the flu vaccine does my child need, and how long should we wait between doses?</h3>
A:
Children from 6 months to 8 years getting the flu vaccine for the first
time need to get two doses in order to maximize having a good immune
response. This year, because the composition of flu vaccine is the same
as last year's, we are recommending that children who received one dose
last year (instead of the recommended two) need only one this year,
rather than the previously recommended two.<br />
If it's your child's
first time, she still needs two doses. Or if you don't know what your
child got before --- if it's not documented anywhere -- [get] two doses.<br />
This
year, we also recommend that children who did not get at least one dose
of the 2012-2013 vaccine receive two doses, even if they received two
doses in some season prior to 2010-2011.<br />
The doses should be at least four weeks apart.<br />

Q: Is H1N1 (swine flu) still a concern?</h3>
A:
Yes. We need to consider whether children get an adequate number of
doses of the H1N1 pandemic strain to be protected from the 2009 H1N1
pandemic virus. It was in last year's vaccine and is also in this year's
vaccine.<br />
Your child will need two doses of this year's flu
vaccine if she did not get at least one dose of the 2010-2011 flu
vaccine, even if he or she received two doses in an earlier season.<br />
<h3>
Q: Which children are eligible for the nasal spray flu vaccine?</h3>
A:
The nasal spray is an option for healthy children over age 2 who don't
have asthma, chronic medical conditions, or other medical problems that
might place them at increased risk for influenza complications.<br />
Sometimes doctors' practices run out of it, or they're not able to stock it every year. But you can ask for it.<br />
<h3>
Q: How can a parent prepare a child for the flu shot, particularly if the child is afraid of injections?</h3>
A:
For children who are fearful of an injection, the nasal spray flu
vaccine is an option. Otherwise, it's just like any other vaccination,
and it may help if the pediatrician has good distraction techniques.<br />
<h3>
Q: What are the typical reactions to the flu shot?</h3>
A:
Generally, the most common side effects from the flu shot are local
symptoms around the site where the shot was given -- things like
soreness, redness, or swelling. Children who get the nasal spray vaccine
may have a runny nose, congestion, or cough.<br />
After either
vaccine, some children may have other symptoms, such as fever or aches.
These effects are usually mild and last only one to two days.<br />
Severe
reactions are rare, but parents could look for a high fever, behavior
changes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction, like trouble breathing
or hives.<br />

A: There is some pain but it usually goes away fast. And it’s one
of the best things you can do to help prevent the flu. There are a lot

A: The season generally begins in September or October and can

The word willpower conjures things like laundry day, drunk texting
and chocolate cake. It is what motivates us to resist what we desire,
and to tackle tasks we’d rather avoid, in the name of personal
betterment. While the motivations behind washing your clothes or
avoiding dessert seem rather clear, a new study found that fuzzier
unconscious motivations can steer our actions, and that high-achievers
and wannabe bosses may have more capacity to dodge cake, or do pesky
chores if there’s a reward at the end.</div>

Those who crave power and leadership roles have more in the
willpower department, according to researchers at the Technical
University of Munich whose findings were published recently in the
online <em>Journal of Personality</em>. Since willpower is a finite
resource, and easily depleted, the professors asked study subjects to
perform two willpower-measuring tasks involving popular films, no prior
acting experience required.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
In the first, subjects reenacted a scene from <i>Dead Poets Society</i>, playing
a domineering father character reprimanding his son, while a control
group watched and took notes. Then the group was asked to will itself
not to laugh or smile during a funny clip from the movie, <i>Ice Age</i>.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Those who acted the part of the bullying father were more likely to
control their emotions and not laugh or smile when instructed not to
than the control group, who had simply watched the role play. Findings
suggest what might seem obvious, that people who hunger for power or
success have greater reserves of resolve to pursue goals than those who
don’t. A politician shows greater stamina dialing for campaign funds
because she is motivated by the prize of winning office. An actor may
tolerate exhaustive grooming, and rigorous diet and exercise hoping to
fit a part.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
But here’s the catch: wanting a specific, finite accomplishment, like
a part, is not enough, a broader underlying desire to lead or succeed
must exist, too. In other words, think big, think ambitious.</div>

While the science didn’t reveal how those loftier desires are
seeded, the researchers did make recommendations for how employers might
optimize employees’ unconscious motivations and direct their willpower
stores toward the right projects. They suggested giving leadership
positions to those who thrive when they control people, and creative
jobs that produce results to approval seekers.</div>

If you're
trying to get healthy, tackling both diet and exercise is better than
trying to improve one lifestyle habit at a time, new research suggests.</div>

The
researchers did add that if you need to start with just one lifestyle
change, choose exercise. They found that changing diet first may
interfere with attempts to establish a regular exercise routine.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The
study included 200 people, aged 45 and older, who were inactive and had
poor diets. They were split into four groups: new diet and exercise
habits at the same time; diet changes first and starting exercise a few
months later; starting exercise first and making diet changes a few
months later; and no diet or exercise changes.</div>

The
groups received telephone coaching and were tracked for a year. Those
who made diet and exercise changes at the same time were most likely to
meet U.S. guidelines for exercise (150 minutes per week) and nutrition
(5 to 9 servings of fruit and vegetables per day), and to keep calories
from saturated fat at less than 10 percent of their total intake of
calories.</div>

The people who started with exercise first and diet
changes a few months later also did a good job of meeting both the
exercise and diet goals, but not quite as good as those who made
exercise and diet changes at the same time, the Stanford University
School of Medicine researchers said in a news release from Stanford.</div>

The
participants who made diet changes first and started exercise later did
a good job of meeting the dietary goals but didn't meet their exercise
targets. This may be because each type of change has unique
characteristics, explained study author Abby King, a professor of health
research and policy and of medicine.</div>

"With dietary habits, you
have no choice; you have to eat. You don't have to find extra time to
eat because it's already in your schedule. So the focus is more on
substituting the right kinds of food to eat," she said in the news
release.</div>

However, people with busy schedules may have difficulty
finding time for exercise. King noted that even the people in the most
successful group (diet and exercise changes at the same time) initially
had trouble meeting their exercise goal, but did achieve it by the end

When it comes to making healthy lifestyle changes, which should come
first — changing your diet or becoming more physically active?</div>

Researchers from Stanford University School of Medicine report in the <em>Annals of Behavioral Medicine</em>
that neither strategy was likely to help individuals meet healthy
eating and fitness recommendations and stick with them for a year. For
the best results, the scientists found that changing diet and fitness
habits simultaneously made the most sense.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Previous studies
suggested that providing people with too much information about
nutrition and physical activity at once can be overwhelming, and tends
to discourage, rather than motivate them to improve their habits. That,
say the researchers, has led to the popularity of advising people to
make incremental changes, and set smaller, more achievable goals to eat
healthier meals and to become less sedentary. But, say some experts,
continually making new changes can also drain energy and motivation, and
lead to a drop in compliance over time.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
So to assess how the two strategies fared in a head-to-head
comparison, the scientists recruited 200 inactive participants who were
age 45 or older and randomly assigned them to one of four groups that
provided nutrition and exercise coaching over the phone. One group was
instructed about making diet and fitness changes at the same time, the
second group were taught about diet changes first, then fitness changes
four months later, the third group changed their exercise habits first
and made changes in their eating habits four months later, and the
final, control group were not instructed about either diet or fitness
changes but about how to manage their stress.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The researchers tracked the groups for a full year to determine which
strategy was more successful in helping participants achieve the
nationally recommended goals of 150 minutes of exercise per week, <a href="http://healthland.time.com/2011/01/31/new-dietary-guidelines-cut-salt-and-sugar-eat-more-fish/" target="_blank" title="New Dietary Guidelines: Cut Salt and Sugar, Eat More Fish">eating </a>five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables daily and keeping saturated fat intake at less than 10%.</div>

Compared to the group that did not receive any dietary or exercise
advice, the three intervention groups made healthy changes in their
diet. Those that changed their fitness regimen first also significantly
increased the amount of exercise they received daily compared to the
other groups after four months. However, at the end of the year, the
group that changed both diet and exercise at the same time was the only
one that met the nationally recommended targets for both exercise and
nutrition levels, while those who worked on improving their nutrition
first were unable to meet the recommended levels of fitness after a
year.</div>

The results raise interesting questions about behavior changes and
compliance. The researches suspect that modifications to diet are easier
to make than changes to physical activity, since meals are already part
of a daily schedule, and exercise requires more effort to incorporate
into an already busy day.</div>

The findings show, however, that pairing dietary and exercise
changes may help to overcome some of the barriers people face in adding
more physical activity into their lives. If folks change diet and
exercise sequentially, the scientists say, they may end up placing more
importance on the first set of behavior changes and feel less pressured
to address the second set. Paying attention to both healthy behaviors at
the beginning of a program, on the other hand, could help to give them
equal priority, and therefore make it more likely that people will be
able to maintain the habits over a longer period of time.</div>

Doctors recommend that people diagnosed with diabetes get regular
exercise, since physical activity can keep them at a healthy weight and
help organs like the lungs, liver and heart to work at their best. But
the details of how breaking a sweat influences the different fat

also allow volunteers to change their diet, pinpointing how physical
activity changes fat depots in the body has been hard to document.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
To gather more information on this relationship, researchers from
Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands turned to detailed
MRI images to study 12 middle-aged diabetic patients both before and
after they participated in a six month program of moderate-intensity
exercise. The volunteers exercised for 3.5 hours to 6 hours a week, and
participated in two endurance and two resistance training sessions,
finishing up with a 12-day hiking expedition. Throughout the study,
however, they were told not to change their diet and eating habits.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
After the training, the researchers found that the participants’
heart functions remained relatively unchanged, but the second round of
MRI scans revealed significant decreases in the volume of fat that
surrounded the heart and lungs as well as in their abdominal area.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
In a statement, the study’s senior author, Dr. Hildo J. Lamb from the
Department of Radiology at Leiden University Medical Center said, “The
liver plays a central role in regulating total body fat distribution.
Therefore, reduction of liver fat content and visceral fat volume by
physical exercise are very important to reverse the adverse effects of
lipid accumulation elsewhere, such as the heart and arterial vessel
wall.”</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Because the study did not follow the patients for an extended period
of time, the changes in fat distribution did not translate into
measurable changes in heart function, but the researchers hope that with
additional follow up, that would occur. And while the study was small,
the results were encouraging since the participants were able to lower
their levels of harmful fat simply by becoming more physically active —
without changing their diet.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The findings also give researchers new insight into how different types
of fat in the body contribute to diseases such as diabetes and heart
disease. Imaging techniques like MRI, for example, might one day
identify people at greater risk of developing the insulin resistance
that heralds diabetes, or future heart problems by revealing fat depots
wrapped around organs. That in turn could help more people to address
their risk factors and prevent health problems by exercising more, or
changing their diet, or both.</div>

But it can be very hard to identify hearing loss until signs of

What Are the Causes of Hearing Loss in Children?</h3>

Children can experience hearing loss due to a variety of causes, including:</div>

<b>Otitis media.</b> This middle ear infection occurs often in
young children because their Eustachian tubes (the tubes that connect
the middle ear to the nose) are not fully developed. Fluid builds up
behind the eardrum and can become infected. Even if there is no pain or
infection, the fluid can impair hearing if it stays there, at least
temporarily. In severe and chronic cases, otitis media can lead to
permanent hearing loss.</li>
<li>
<b>Congenital factors.</b> Some children are born with hearing
problems -- either as a result of genetic factors or because of prenatal
or childbirth problems. More than half of all congenital hearing
problems in children are due to genetics. Hearing loss can also result
when a pregnant woman develops certain conditions such as diabetes or
toxemia. Premature birth also raises a child's risk for hearing
problems.</li>
<li>
<b>Acquired hearing loss.</b> A variety of conditions can
trigger hearing problems in young children, including illnesses such as
meningitis, encephalitis, measles, chickenpox, some forms of genetic
hearing loss, and influenza. Head injuries, very loud noises, and
certain medications can also lead to acquired hearing loss.</li>
</ul>

Signs and Symptoms of Hearing Loss in Children</h3>

As a parent, you are likely to be the first person to notice
hearing problems in your child. Some early indications of a hearing

Treatment Options for Children With Hearing Loss</h3>
Treatment options for children with hearing loss depend upon the condition and degree of hearing impairment.<br />
The most common types of treatment for otitis media include:<br />
<ul>
<li>
<b>Watchful waiting.</b> Because the condition often clears on
its own, sometimes the initial treatment for otitis media is simply to
monitor the child for any changes.</li>
<li>
<b>Medications.</b> Your pediatrician may prescribe antibiotics or other medications for your child.</li>
<li>
<b>Ear tubes.</b> If the problem persists and seems to be
affecting your child's hearing, your pediatrician may suggest that your
child receive ear tubes. These allow fluid to drain and can help prevent
infection. If your pediatrician thinks your child needs ear tubes, he
or she will refer you to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist, also
known as an otolaryngologist. Inserting ear tubes is a minor outpatient
surgical procedure, but your child will have to have a general
anesthetic in the hospital.</li>
</ul>
Other types of treatment for children with hearing loss include:<br />

<b>Hearing aids.</b> Children with hearing loss can begin to use
hearing aids when they are as young as 1 month old. Your hearing
specialist will help ensure that your child is fitted with the most

<b>Implants.</b> Many children and adults are now getting
cochlear implants, electronic devices that help with hearing. These are
usually used for children with serious hearing problems, for whom
hearing aids have not been effective.</li>

<b>Other hearing devices.</b> There are a number of other
devices that can help children with hearing loss with communication and
learning. Ask a hearing specialist about other devices that might be
appropriate for your child.</li>
</ul>
Under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA),
children with hearing loss are entitled to early intervention and
appropriate education from the time they are born and throughout their
school years. Early intervention can help your child learn to
communicate through speech or signing, or a combination of both.<br />
If your child needs ongoing support and intervention in school,
work with your school administrators to make sure he or she gets the
help that's needed. As your child matures, it's likely that his or her
education program will need readjusting. So you will need to stay
involved to ensure your child gets the help he or she needs.<br />
Parental support and effective early intervention have been shown to
increase the chances that children with hearing loss will learn to
communicate and to participate in school and other activities. This is
especially true in children who use cochlear implants. Children with
cochlear implants who have involved parents frequently show much better
performance than children with less involved parents. The same is true
for children who use hearing aids. <br />
Here are a few things you can do to help your child -- and yourself:<br />
<ul>
<li>
<b>Educate yourself</b>. Web sites, as well as government and nonprofit organizations, can help you keep up with the latest developments and research.</li>
<li>
<b>Communicate</b>. Seek out support groups and online chat
communities for parents of children with hearing loss. These groups can
provide information and a sense of community.</li>
<li>
<b>Stay in touch with your child.</b> According to child
development experts, some children with hearing loss feel socially
isolated as a result of their hearing impairment. However, early
intervention and the use of assistive technologies can reduce the
chances of social isolation in children.</li>
<li>
<b>Take care of yourself and your other relationships</b>.
Getting help for children with hearing loss can be an all-consuming
task. But don't neglect your own well-being or your other relationships.
Make time for each other, stay in touch with friends, and pursue the
activities you enjoy.</li>

do not cause serious physical harm, they can result in a lot of
emotional distress because many people still mistakenly believe they are
a sign of poor hygiene, an expert explains.

Head lice bite into the scalp to feed on blood, but
these bites are usually not painful. Still, a lice infestation can
strike fear in families for a number of reasons, including the stigma of
being deemed "dirty." </div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
A lice infestation, however, is not a reflection of
a person's cleanliness, according to Dr. Andrew Bonwit, a pediatric
infectious disease expert at Loyola University Health System in
Illinois.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"Personal hygiene and socioeconomic status have
nothing to do with having or transmitting head lice. The head louse is
an equal-opportunity pest," explained Bonwit in a university news
release. "The infestation is usually a nuisance and almost never a
serious problem in itself." </div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
There are other common misconceptions about lice,
Bonwit pointed out. In order to ease parents' fears, he dispelled the
following myths: </div>
<ul class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<li>
<b>Myth: Pets spread lice.</b> "Animals are not known to carry head lice nor to transmit them to people," Bonwit said. </li>
<li>
<b>Myth: Sharing personal items spreads lice. </b> "Although
it's probably best not to share such items as combs, hairbrushes and
hats, these do not seem to transmit the pest," Bonwit added.
"Transmission of lice seems to occur only by direct head-to-head contact
from one person to another." </li>
<li>
<b>Myth: Kids with lice should be sent home from school immediately.</b>
"The American Academy of Pediatrics does not endorse 'no-nit' policies
that exclude children from school because nits are present," Bonwit
noted. "In fact, even the presence of mature head lice is not considered
a valid reason to exclude children, only a cause for prompt referral to
the physician for treatment." </li>
<li>
<b>Myth: Lice carry disease.</b> "Head lice do not transmit serious infectious disease," Bonwit explained. </li>
</ul>

Although lice often cause a big stir, they are tiny
and often hard to spot. "Lice are very small, about the length of George
Washington's nose on a quarter," said Bonwit, who is also an assistant
professor of pediatric infectious disease at Loyola University Chicago
Stritch School of Medicine. "The lice produce eggs, called nits, which
become strongly cemented to the host's <a href="http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/picture-of-the-hair">hair</a> shafts." </div>

Nits look like small, dark spots on the side of the
hair shaft. Although the infestation isn't painful, it can be itchy,
Bonwit cautioned. "Sometimes the patient has been so itchy that he or
she scratches the scalp to the point of minor skin infections and even
causing some enlarged lymph nodes on the back of the neck or behind the
ears," he said. "While these changes may alarm parents, they aren't
directly harmful." </div>

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
reports that up to 12 million lice infestations occur each year in the
United States among children aged 3 to 11 years.</div>

"Parents
and school staff may become understandably upset by outbreaks of head
lice, but it is important to remember that if the problem occurs, it is
treatable, although repeat applications of medicine are usually needed,"
Bonwit said.</div>

The most common lice treatment is over-the-counter
or prescription shampoos or lotions that must be applied to the scalp,
left on for a specified time, then rinsed off. Often a fine-toothed comb
is also needed to remove nits to prevent further infestation.</div>

"The life cycle is about seven days from the laying
of the eggs to the hatching, so a second insecticide treatment is
recommended, after the first application," Bonwit advised. "If the
treatments are used as directed, problems other than scalp irritation

College students in search of a good night's sleep may
want to put some distance between their pillow and their cell phone, new
research suggests.
</div>

However, study author Karla Klein Murdock, a
professor of psychology at Washington and Lee University in Lexington,
Va., took pains to make clear that her work does not draw a direct
cause-and-effect between more texting and worse sleep, only an apparent
association.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
But the research did reveal that whether or not a
student was experiencing stress, greater texting frequency correlated
with key indicators of sleep trouble. That, she noted, took the form of
sleeping less, taking longer to fall asleep, spending less time actually
sleeping while in bed, experiencing disturbances throughout the night
and/or feeling tired during the day.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
What's more, among students for whom stress is an
issue, frequent texting appears to make things worse, ultimately
undermining their overall sense of emotional well-being and contributing
to a higher risk for burnout.</div>

"In other words, high levels of texting may exacerbate the negative psychological effects of stress," Murdock said.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
At the same time, "sleep problems," she added, "may
occur because students continue to use their cellphones at night, which
pushes bedtime later and/or makes it difficult to fall asleep right
away. Also, students may be awakened in the middle of the night when an
incoming message makes their cellphone ring, buzz or light up."</div>

Murdock reported her findings in a recent issue of the journal <i>Psychology of Popular Media</i>.</div>

Considerable prior research (including a 2007 survey
by the American College Health Association) suggests that many college
students are significantly sleep-deprived, Murdock noted.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
To explore texting's potential role in contributing
to sleep disturbance and stress, Murdock focused on the texting habits
of 83 first-year students (roughly two-thirds female) who were attending
what she describes as a "rigorous, southeastern liberal college."</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Three-quarters were white, and all were between the ages of 18 and 21.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
In addition to asking the students to report their
average daily texting routine, all underwent a battery of tests to
assess their stress levels; the degree to which they had experienced
academic and/or social burnout; and their emotional well-being as
reflected in how happy, satisfied and interested in life they had felt
over the prior month.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
As well, all underwent standard assessments for sleep quality and signs of sleep disturbances.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The result: Higher daily texting lined up with
poorer sleep, perhaps because students felt compelled to respond to
incoming texts, no matter the time of day, Murdock said.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
In addition, heavier texting activity was also
associated with increased difficulties in coping with stress for those
already experiencing it. And although the study did not specifically set
out to examine the reasons for this, Murdock suggested that the lack of
nuance, context and key visual cues that typifies texting could account
for the increased vulnerability to stress that the activity appears to
prompt.</div>

"[And] text messaging is unique in the nearly perpetual
access to social contact that it provides," she explained. "[So] during
times of stress in social relationships, frequent texting may <i>prevent</i> a restorative or health-promoting pause in communication from occurring."</div>

However, Murdock advised against concluding that texting raises the risk for severe mental health issues among college students.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"We measured academic and social burnout and
emotional well-being," she noted. "None of these is really a
psychological problem, like depression or anxiety. They are just
different aspects of well-being. [So] I would say the bottom line is
moderation in all things, including texting."</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Tara Marshall, a lecturer in the department of
psychology at Brunel University's School of Social Sciences in Uxbridge,
England, also cautioned against reading too much into the study's
observations.</div>
<div class="node" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
"Although these findings have potential implications
for students' well-being, namely that they should reduce their texting,
especially when feeling already stressed, it's important to note that
the findings are correlational and do not show that texting causes
reductions in well-being," she said.</div>

"There could be other factors not measured in this
study that underlie both greater texting behavior and propensity for
interpersonal stress, " Marshall added, "such as higher neuroticism or
lower self-esteem. These personality traits could be responsible for the
link with burnout, sleep problems and compromised well-being, rather
than texting per se. Until these personality traits are taken into
account, and controlled experiments demonstrate that greater texting
causes sleep problems, the results of this study need to be taken with a
grain of salt. "</div>

The FDA is continuing to investigate a possible link between the <a href="http://www.webmd.com/multiple-sclerosis/default.htm">multiple sclerosis</a> drug <a href="http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-154676-gilenya+oral.aspx?drugid=154676&drugname=gilenya+oral">Gilenya</a> (fingolimod) and a case of a rare brain infection in a European patient.</div>

patient took the drug for nearly 8 months before being diagnosed with
the brain infection. The FDA issued an alert at the end of August to
inform the public of its investigation.</div>

The brain
infection, sometimes fatal, is called PML (progressive multifocal
leukoencephalopathy). The European case is the first reported in a
patient who has not previously taken the drug <a href="http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-92180-tysabri+iv.aspx">Tysabri</a> (<a href="http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-92174-natalizumab+iv.aspx">natalizumab</a>). Tysabri is already known to be linked with a higher risk for PML.</div>

maker of Gilenya, Novartis, issued a statement saying it had reviewed
all available evidence and that the case of PML in Europe is unlikely to
be linked to the drug.</div>

in 2010 for relapsing MS, is taken by mouth. It is one of three new oral
drugs approved in the last 3 years. The other two are Tecfidera
